Ongoing UN Peacekeeping Missions in Africa

There are currently seven United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in Africa.   UNMISS The United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan began July 2011 when the Republic of South Sudan officially became the newest country in Africa, having split from The Sudan. The split came after decades of war, and the peace remains fragile. In December 2013, renewed violence broke out, and the UNMISS team was accused of partisanship. A cessation of hostilities was reached 23 January 2014, and the UN authorized further troops for the Mission, which continues to supply humanitarian aid. As of June 2015 the Mission had 12,523 service personnel and more then 2,000 civilian staff members. UNISFA: The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei began June 2011. It was tasked with protecting civilians in the region of Abyei, along the border between The Sudan and what became the Republic of South Sudan. The Force is also tasked with helping The Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan with stabilizing their border near Abyei. In May 2013, the UN expanded the force.   As of June 2015, the Force was comprised of 4,366 service personnel and more than 200 civilian staff members and UN volunteers. MONUSCO The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo commenced 28 May 2010. It replaced the UN Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. While the Second Congo War officially ended in 2002, fighting continues, particularly in the eastern Kivu region of the DRC. The MONUSCO force is authorized to use force if need be to protect civilians and humanitarian personnel. It was due to be withdrawn in March 2015, but was extended into 2016.   UNMIL The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) was created 19 September 2003 during the Second Liberian Civil War. It replaced the UN Peace-building Support Office in Liberia. The warring factions signed a peace agreement in August 2003, and general elections were held in 2005. The UNMILs current mandate includes continuing to protect civilians from any violence and providing humanitarian aid. It is also tasked with assisting the Liberian government with strengthening national institutions for justice. UNAMID The African Union / United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur began 31 July 2007, and as of June 2015, it was the largest peacekeeping operation in the world. The African Union deployed peacekeeping forces to Darfur in 2006, following the signing of a peace accord between The Sudan government and rebel groups.   The peace agreement was not implemented, and in 2007, UNAMID replaced the AU operation. The UNAMID is tasked with facilitating the peace process, providing security, helping establish the rule of law, providing humanitarian aid, and protecting civilians. UNOCI The United Nations Operation in Cà ´te dIvoire began in  April 2004. It replaced the much smaller United Nations Mission in  Cà ´te dIvoire. Its original mandate was to facilitate the peace agreement that ended the Ivorian Civil War. It took six years, though, to hold elections, and after the 2010 elections, the incumbent, President  Laurent Gbagbo, who had governed since 2000, did not step down. Five months of violence followed, but it ended with the arrest of Gbagbo in 2011. Since then, there has been progress, but the UNOCI remains in  Cà ´te dIvoire to protect civilians, ease the transition, and ensure disarmament. MINURSO The  UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) began 29 April 1991.   Its outcomes were to   Monitor the ceasefire and troop locationsOversee POW exchanges and repatriation Organize a referendum on  Ã‚  Western Sahara  independence from Morocco The mission has been ongoing for twenty-five years. During that time, MINURSO forces have assisted in maintaining the ceasefire and removing mines, but it has not yet been possible to organize a referendum on Western Saharan independence. To determine the service effectiveness of this or ganization, it is important that the front and backstage department should be evaluated. By service encounter, we mean to say that the situation or the environment when and where the service deliver being takes place. As given in the figure 1 about the front stage department of the organization, it can be said that issues with the customers regarding the service being provided by them is the main determinant to identify the gap in the existing customer service (Mair and Hehenberger 2014). Thus, according to me, suggestion from the customers will be well evaluated in order to deliver them effective service which will meet the requirement of the customers. It is always being recommended that the service deliver should be according to the taste and preference pattern of the custome rs. It will help the organization in enhancing the effectiveness of the service being provided to the customers (Jahanshani et al. 2014). Thus, proper determination of the customer feedback will help to identify the customer requirement and the service can be delivered accordingly. As shown in the figure 1, it will help in generating positive word of mouth from the customers. Thus, the service encounter will be more enhanced and effective if the service is being delivered according to the figure 1. During the service encounter, the Grace hotel should also considers the various issues being found with the service being delivered to the customers. This is due to the reason that the service sectors have to fulfill the diversified requirement of the customers which sometimes pose challenge for the organizations (Wu and Wang 2012). However, in the case of the Grace hotel, they are having favorable environment in this case due to the reason that the target segment of them is a niche market and this market lacks in diversified customer requirement. As shown in the figure 2 regarding the backstage flowchart, allocation of resources and the raw materials from the suppliers are the main determinants for evaluating the effectiveness of the employees. Hotel industry where the Grace hotel is currently operating requires various raw materials which are being collected from the suppliers (Bon and Mustafa 2013). Thus, the more effective will be the suppliers and the supply chain of their own, the more effective will be the service encounter for the backstage employees. Allocation of resources is also important for them due to the reason that it determines the investment and development of various aspects such infrastructure and housekeeping. Thus, the more productive will be the allocation of the resources, the more will be their effective service encounter. Afterwards, training of the employees is the secondary determinant due to the reason that, the productivity of the employees will determine the extent to which the resources can be effectively used. The more efficient will be the front stage employees, the more will be the effective customer service being provided. As it is being known that the front stage employees are the key responsible to handle the customers directly. Thus, the image of the organization is much more dependent on them. The impression of the customers being created by having service from the front stage employees will be the key influencing factor to analyze the service encounter. Thus, these are the aspects which should be considered in having the effective service encounter. There are various managerial implications for the service delivery to the customers due to the reason that they are one who influence the employees in their workplace (Bateman and Snell 2013). The main responsibility of the managers in the service industry is to maintain the effective working environment for the employees. Employees will be more motivated and engaged in their workplace if the safety and security of them can be effectively taken care of. Various employee welfare schemes initiated by the managers will prove beneficial for organization due to the reason that it will enhance the productivity of the employees (Lamba and Choudhary 2013). Hotel industry is rapidly growing and changing with the change in the taste and preference pattern of the customers. Newer technologies are being introduced in the hotel industries to further enhance the customer service. Thus, it is important for the managers to train their employees according to the recent change in the industry. It will help the organization in coping up with the change in the market along with fulfilling the current trend of demand of the customers. Eventually it will enable the organization in staying ahead in the market by offering the innovative approaches in the customer service. Moreover the enhancement of the employee engagement is also one of the key responsibilities of the managers. It is due to the reason that, motivated employees will lead to more effective productivity in the organization. As it is being known that the front line employees will directly deal with the employees, thus, motivation of the employees will further enable them in delivering the effective customer service. Thus, it can be concluded that the managers have important role to play in driving the employee productivity in the organization. Sea Urchins and Sand Dollars Are the Round Echinoderms Sea urchins and sand dollars (Echinoidea) are a group of echinoderms that are spiny, globe or disk-shaped animals. Sea urchins and sand dollars are found in all the worlds oceans. Like most other echinoderms, they are pentaradially symmetrical (the have five sides arranged around a central point). Characteristics Sea urchins range in size from as small as a couple of inches in diameter to over a foot in diameter. They have a mouth located on their upper part of their body (also known as the oral surface) although some sea urchins have a mouth located towards one end (if their body shape is irregular). Sea urchins have tube feet and move using a water vascular system. Their endoskeleton consists of calcium carbonate spicules or ossicles. In sea urchins, these ossicles are fused into plates that form a shell-like structure called a test. The test encloses the internal organs and provides support and protection. Sea urchins can sense touch, chemicals in the water, and light. They do not have eyes but their entire body seems to detect light in some manner. Sea urchins have a mouth that consists of five jaw-like parts (similar to the structure of brittle stars). But in sea urchins, the chewing structure is known as Aristotles lantern (so named for the description of Aristotles History of Animals). The teeth of sea urchins sharpen themselves as they  grind food. The Aristotles lantern encloses the mouth and the pharynx and empties into the esophagus which in turn connects to the small intestine and caecum. Reproduction Some species of sea urchins have long, sharp spines. These spines serve as protection from predators and can be painful if they puncture the skin. It has not been determined in all species whether the spines are venomous or not. Most sea urchins have spines that are about an inch long (give or take a bit). The spines are often rather blunt at the end although a few species have longer, sharper spines. Sea urchins have separate sexes (both male and female). It is difficult to distinguish between the sexes but males usually select different microhabitats. They are usually found in more exposed or higher locations than females, enabling them to disperse their spermatic fluid into the water and distribute it better. Females, in contrast, select more protected locations to forage and rest. Sea urchins have five gonads located on the underside of the test (although some species only have four gonads). They release gametes into the water and fertilization takes place in open water. Fertilized eggs develop into free-swimming embryos. A larva develops from the embryo. The larva develops test plates and descends to the seafloor where it completes its transformation into an adult form. Once in its adult form, the sea urchin continues to grow for several years until it reaches its mature size. Diet Sea urchins feed on algae for the most part although some species also feed occasionally on other invertebrates such as sponges, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, and mussels. Although they appear to be sessile (attached to the seafloor or substrate) they are capable of moving. They move over surfaces by way of their tube feet and spines. Sea urchins provide a food source for sea otters as well as wolf eels. Evolution Fossil sea urchins date back about 450 million years ago to the Ordovician period. Analysis of Zora Neale Hurston and her writing style: Zora Neale Hurston was born on 7th January 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama. Her father, John Hurston was a preacher and a carpenter, while her mother Lucy Hurston, was a schoolteacher. Soon, the family moved to Eatonville in Florida, a town famous for having the first black incorporated Municipality. Hurston completed her graduation from Harvard University and it is from here that she embarked on her writing career in 1921. Soon she moved to New York and became a prominent figure in the then famous ‘Harlem Renaissance’ writing group. Hurston was also an anthropologist, and in fact, her experiences in Eatonville and her researches into old folktales of the black population which influenced much of her writings.
